2,000 jobs at risk under LNP plan to block building projects
More than 2,000 road worker jobs in the north are at risk under an LNP plan to cut building projects across Queensland, Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said today.
Minister Wallace said the LNP's secret infrastructure hit list was finally revealed today when Opposition Treasury spokesman, Tim Nicholls, told radio that the LNP would 'reassess' building projects being rolled out across the state.
"The LNP's chief bean counter has finally spilled the beans and you know what that means - all those important road projects here in the north are at risk and thousands of road workers now face a very uncertain future," Mr Wallace said.
Mr Wallace today released a hit list of major Townsville road projects and jobs that could go under the LNP plan.
*Cardwell Range Road $115 million 420 jobs
*Douglas Arterial Duplication $110 million 480 jobs
*Gregory Development Road $ 39 million 220 jobs
*Burdekin Bridge project $ 43 million 90 jobs
*Townsville Port Access Road $190 million 960 jobs
"That's around half a billion dollars in road building projects. Worse still, it means the loss of 2,170 jobs for local road workers," Mr Wallace said.
"In tough economic times, you need to build projects to build strong economies and protect jobs. That's what the State Labor Government has done and will continue to do.
"Tim Nicholls was caught out today and in that defining moment he showed the real difference between Labor and the LNP.
"We're rolling out a massive building program right across the state to make our economy strong and protect jobs for Queenslanders. The LNP has finally shown their true colours as a party of job blockers and job knockers," he said.
"I challenge the LNP and Tim Nicholls to get out of the big smoke, head up here and look our road workers in the eye and tell them their job is safe under an LNP led State Government," he said.
