$40,000 a year for Motor Neurone disease support

Minister for Disability Services Annastacia Palaszczuk today announced financial assistance for Queenslanders affected by Motor Neurone disease.

Ms Palaszczuk said the Bligh Government would provide $40,000 a year to the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland (MNDAQ).

"I recently met with the association, which told me that it needs extra funds to support the 350 people across Queensland who rely on its services," she said.

"We've responded to this need, and the Bligh Government is pleased to be providing the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland with ongoing funding of $40,000 a year.

"With our support, the association will be able to continue its outstanding work and keep supporting Queenslanders affected by Motor Neurone disease."

Ms Palaszczuk said Motor Neurone disease was a life altering condition that could affect anyone at anytime throughout their life.

"Approximately 1300 people in Australia are affected by the disease, with thousands more including carers, friends and families impacted," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Motor Neurone disease affects the muscles that enable a person to move, speak, breathe and swallow, eventually leading to general paralysis.

"It's a debilitating disease that can rapidly turn the lives of everyday Australians upside down.

"On average someone in Australia is diagnosed with the disease every day."

Ms Palaszczuk said MNDAQ provided valuable information, support and consultancy services to people with the disease as well as their carers and other health professionals.

"This organisation plays a vital role helping Queenslanders with Motor Neurone disease get the care and support they need," she said.

"Our support for the association is another sign of the Bligh Government's commitment to creating a modern, inclusive Queensland."
