A sustainable economy and a sustainable environment

Mayoral candidate Debbie Blumel has unveiled her environment policy with an emphasis on jobs in the clean technology industry on the Sunshine Coast.

“You don’t have to choose between a sustainable economy and a sustainable environment,” Cr Blumel said. “You can have both.”

“As the only Mayoral candidate who has experience as a councillor I know how to deliver on both the economy and the environment. The clean technology industry will be a key jobs generator in a successful 21st century Sunshine Coast economy.

“Value for money is what drives consumer demand for the environmentally sustainable goods and services, and commercial profitability is what drives business success.

“The Sunshine Coast must focus on innovation if we want to be competitive. We need to deliver on smart ideas and drive the commercialisation of innovation.

“My policy provides for a new direction in commercial opportunities around the new sustainability technologies. The focus is on driving down the cost of living and the cost of doing business with environmentally sustainable technologies.

“That means challenging ways of doing things that have trapped us into high cost dinosaur technologies. New technologies will lead to capital and operational cost savings for families and businesses, particularly in water, waste, energy, materials recovery and lighting.

“Environmental solutions that are not value for money are no solution at all.”

My policy (see attached) includes:
• Incentives for high tech, high value, low impact, knowledge businesses
• Scientific approach to how we respond to shore line erosion
• Maintenance of biodiversity through conservation corridors
• Ecosystem mapping and services
• Implementing the Flood Commission report recommendations
• Continuing council community sponsorships and partnerships
“All these measures are sensible and achievable and will help to deliver a sustainable economy and sustainable environment.”
