Abandonment Of Poker Machine Refom Means No Job Losses In Our Clubs

The Prime Minister has all but abandoned Labor’s deal with Independent Andrew Wilkie, for poker machine reform. Nationally, the Clubs industry prepares to celebrate the delay and subsequent demise of the reforms, dubious as to their impact on problem gamblers. Locally, our Clubs aren’t confident in the likelihood of jobs growth.

Caloundra RSL General Manager Steve Fromont said: “It shouldn’t make too much difference to recruiting and business, on the basis that nothing changes. The economic variables of the local economy will have far more impact on our growth in employment”.

Further north at Maroochy RSL, the news was the same, with General Manager Harvey Fewings commenting on mandatory pre-commitment “There are systems in place already for self-declaration, where people can make a personal choice and commitment. However, what’s to stop people gambling online? Last year our Club contributed $480,000 to the community in cash and kind. We’re sure the community would like that to continue.”

When asked what would stimulate employment growth, Mr Fewings said removing the carbon tax, as it would add $100,000 to the Club’s expenses, virtually overnight.

Owner of local recruitment agency New Staff Solutions, Peta Simpson said “The employment market is getting tighter and tighter here on the Sunshine Coast. We’re noticing a big change in people’s attitudes. People who are looking for work are ready to give up; they simply can’t find jobs here.
We’re looking to our governments to remove barriers for business, enabling employers to expand their workforce. We need hope, reward and opportunity to be restored!”

Whilst it’s disappointing that the Prime Minister’s backflip on poker reform legislation won’t create jobs locally; at least it won’t cost the region any more jobs.
