Abbott and Newman - Truth or Dare?

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has turned his back on the state's booming resources industry, putting at risk billions of dollars in investment and tens of thousands of mining jobs, Employment, Skills and Mining Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said today.

Mr Hinchliffe said Mr Abbott's comments to 2GB's Alan Jones that landholders should be able to keep gas companies off their properties was an outrageous statement from the leader of a party that prides itself on being pro-development.

"Worse, he has turned back the clock on 100 years of mining tenure in our state," he said.

"All Queenslanders are the owners of the state's rich resources and all Queenslanders benefit from the royalties that government collects from the mining companies.

"These royalties help build our schools and hospitals, put police on the beat and teachers in our classrooms," he said.

"I can't help but wonder whether we should wait until Tony Abbott puts something in writing. He has form.

"Who could forget Tony Abbott's admission on The 7.30 Report that unless the words coming from his mouth are scripted, voters can't trust him to tell the truth?

"So was it Gospel Truth Tony talking to Alan Jones or Phoney Tony?"

"He's just the same as Campbell Newman who says one thing to farmers west of the Great Divide and another to corporate chiefs of industry in the boardrooms of Brisbane.

"He was at it again this afternoon telling 4BC Radio listeners they could find the LNP's policy on coal seam gas on his website. There's no policy - it's a Discussion Paper. He hasn't got a policy. Queenslanders still don't know where he stands on this important issue.

"The State Government has come up with sensible, workable solutions that protect jobs and safeguard environmentally-sensitive areas from mining," he said.
