ABC reminds Newman that mining means jobs
ABC radio's flagship rural program Queensland Country Hour had to
remind the unelected leader of the LNP Campbell Newman in an
interview today that mining generated jobs and millions of
dollars in royalties for Queenslanders.
Mining Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said while the State Labor
Government has sensible, workable solutions that protect jobs and
safeguard the environment, the LNP is all over the shop with
on-again, off-again policies.
"To make matters worse, mining magnate and LNP financial backer
Clive Palmer's coal interests are also at risk of being
railroaded by Campbell Newman," he said.
Campbell Newman told Queensland Country Hour that he would 'never
have approved' a number of mining projects underway in Central
Queensland.
"Has anyone told Clive yet? What we heard on radio today will
also lead to even deeper divisions between Campbell Newman and
Jeff Seeney, the LNP's Parliamentary leader," Mr Hinchliffe
said.
The Minister said the LNP was in a mess over their on-again,
off-again, mining policies.
"First, Campbell Newman declared all policies null and void. Then
he recycled Jeff Seeney's policy - one that removed protection
for landholders. While all this was going on, you had one LNP
member calling for a moratorium on coal seam gas, with another
wanting to lock the gate on the industry.
"At the LNP State Conference last month they came up with a
policy that didn't even see light of day. Bitter infighting
turned that one into Discussion Paper.
"Back in May, the Campbell Newman was reported in The Australian
newspaper, saying he would announce the LNP's policy in four to
eight weeks. That was more than 10 weeks ago and Queenslanders
are still waiting," he said.
"Campbell Newman says one thing in the bush, another in the
corporate boardrooms. No one knows what he really stands for. For
someone who built silos, it's hard to find a grain of truth in
what he says," Mr Hinchliffe said.
