Agriculture Minister calls on consumers to support Queensland growers
The best way consumers can help Queensland’s fruit farmers,
particularly Bundaberg and North Burnett citrus growers hit by
recent floods, is to buy locally grown fruit.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh is
calling on all consumers to buy citrus grown in the Burnett
region when they next go grocery shopping.
“Many individual farms in the Bundaberg and North Burnett region
have been smashed by the floods, but overall our farm industries
need to keep going and they will with our support,” Mr McVeigh
said.
“I am heartened by the pledge by Woolworths not to turn to
imported fruit, but to continue to stock local, Queensland-grown
citrus.
“I’ve called on Coles and other supermarket chains to follow suit
and for consumers to look for local, Queensland-grown
product.
“Last week I toured the North Burnett region and met with Gayndah
citrus growers, some of whom will start picking lemons this
week.
“Others I understand around Bundaberg are going to start picking
and cleaning fruit for the marketplace, to try to get their
businesses producing again and generating cash-flow which has to
be good for local jobs and local communities.
“This really is a time for consumers to buy Bundy and Burnett
citrus and I call on supermarkets and other retail outlets to do
their bit in promoting fruit from the regions.
“This is the best way to help our farmers and their regional
economies get up and running again.”
