Algal Bloom Not a Threat to the Maroochy River
17 March 2007 Algal Bloom Not a Threat to the Maroochy River
It has been confirmed by University of Queensland that the algae in the Maroochy River near the oil spills is Iodine Weed.
It is a rocky foreshore algae and occurs naturally in SEQ and NSW.
It was most likely washed into the river during the cyclone and happened to lodge itself where the oil slick was due to the currents.
It is not considered a threat and it will most likely die out over the next few weeks.
Today the algae decreased in size by about half.
We will keep monitoring the situation.
Council has done a fantastic job cleaning up the oil mess and should be congratulated.
The river and beaches are just as beautiful as they always have been. If people are planning to have a holiday up here for Easter, they will be able to enjoy the area as if the slick never happened.
