Australian PGA Championship on course until 2012
Sport Minister Phil Reeves today announced the Bligh Government will continue its investment in the award-winning Australian PGA Championship at Coolum for a further three years, from 2010 until 2012.
"Queensland Events and the PGA of Australia have worked together to renew this fine partnership, and we're thrilled to keep this great event in Queensland," Mr Reeves said.
"2010 marks a decade of support for the Championship and each year the field of players and surrounding events just get better and better.
"In that time the event has celebrated its centenary in 2005; increased its profile as part of the One Asia tour; and attracted international broadcast coverage which promotes Queensland around the globe.
"In the past, the PGA has brought a direct injection of more than $11 million to the Sunshine Coast economy.
"This doesn't include the extra benefit of tourism dollars spent on the Coast by domestic and international visitors.
"The event also generates more than 100 jobs for Queenslanders."
Mr Reeves congratulated CEO of the PGA of Australia Max Garske and his team on creating a host of well-supported tourism events around the Championship.
"From the PGA Ladies Lunch on the annual Sunshine Coast calendar to junior and amateur golf events, there are a range of additional activities which take place during Championship week, creating a substantial boost to Queensland's profile and tourism economy," Mr Reeves said.
"The Championship also won the highly coveted Major Festivals and Events Category at the Queensland Tourism Awards, which shows it's not just all about the golf."
CEO of the PGA of Australia Mr Garske said the renewed agreement was great news for the profession and for the event.
"The Australian PGA Championship is one of the longest-running events in the country, and much of its success over the past decade has been due to the support of the Bligh Government through Queensland Events and the wonderful host venue at the Hyatt Regency Coolum," he said.
"Keeping the event in Queensland is an important part of our overall strategy and enables us to promote the State via the tournament to key tourism markets in Asia and around the globe.
"We know the players love the venue and the destination - they bring their families and stay for a holiday on the Sunshine Coast - and we're pleased to have confirmation that they can continue to return here for the next three years."
