AVIATION HIGH SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH $6 MILLION REVAMP

Brisbane's Aviation High today celebrated the official opening of its $6 million redeveloped facilities.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the school would produce the next generation of air traffic controllers, pilots and aviation experts.

"The Bligh Government is partnering with industry to meet future training needs," Mr Wilson said.

"Aviation High is the hub for Queensland's 17 Aerospace Project Gateway Schools.

"We're working hard with industry partners to make sure curriculum is relevant and students gain the skills they need to pursue their chosen careers."

Mr Wilson said the Bligh Government was investing in infrastructure and the redevelopment had generated about 46 jobs.

"The school now has incredible facilities including a radio room, an aircraft control systems laboratory, rebuilt science and flight simulator centres.

"There are also graphic art computer laboratories, multi-purpose sports faci lities and an aircraft-themed catering facility."

The Minister's visit to the school also marked World Teachers Day celebrations.

"In the 2009 NAPLAN tests, Aviation High's Year 9 students performed well above the State average with results equal to, or better than, the national average in all test areas.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate teachers and support staff for their efforts.

"One Aviation High teacher will receive her 25 year Service Medallion today.

"This is a wonderful achievement and the teacher will join more than 1550 teachers being recognised today for more than 22,500 years of collective service in educating state school students."
