Bligh to deliver Education Trust and a surplus in 2014-15, Newman in $5 billion spending spree and can't deliver surplus
The Bligh Government will deliver an education trust for the
future and return the budget to surplus one year early in
2014-15, while Campbell Newman has no idea when he'd get the
budget back in the black after racking up $5 billion worth of
unfunded election promises.
Deputy Premier and Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the fact that the
Government will return to surplus early means it has the
flexibility to invest in policies like Anna Bligh's Queensland
Education Trust.
"The Premier's bold plan to redistribute half the royalties from
the LNG industry over the next decade to the educational needs of
our kids is the kind of big idea we expect of our leaders," Mr
Fraser said.
"The trust design is still out for consultation but the detailed
cash flows we released last year showed $34 million required in
2014-15 to deliver an individual education nest egg for all
newborns.
"Whichever way you cut it the Budget will remain in surplus in
2014-15 under Labor.
"The trust requires cash flows higher than 50% of royalties in
some years and lower injections in the first years - all that has
already been detailed on page 6 of the policy proposal.
"Any attempt to deny these facts is a blatant misrepresentation.
The LNP needs to detail when it will bring the Budget back to
surplus before it has any credibility on this issue.
"The clear commitment was to invest up to half of LNG royalties
over the next decade to establish the Trust. That's what the
policy document sets out.
"In contrast, Campbell Newman has no big ideas for the future,
and no idea when he'd bring the budget back to surplus.
"All he has is stunts, slogans, and more than $5 billion worth of
unfunded promises.
"He says his campaign is underway - so why doesn't he have the
courage to tell the people of Queensland how he'll fund his $5
billion spending spree."
Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for State
Development and Trade
