Calling all Playwrights!! Last chance to Enter 2010 Playwriting Competition
Entries close 15th November 2009
From small beginnings 30 years ago, the National One Act Playwriting Competition at Noosa Arts Theatre has become a national festival attracting over 70 entries a year from around Australia and overseas, and there are just a few weeks left to get your entries in for the 2010 Competition.
Titles such as Michael Olsen's Two Women and a Chair (Winner in 2001) are top sellers both here and in NZ and Jane Tara's Bombshells (Winner in 2000) went on to acclaimed production in New York.
More recently, former Beattie government scriptwriter Hugh O'Brien has had 3 plays achieve success at the festival, and has gone on to have several other plays published.
O'Brien had this to say:
"In 2005, I was fortunate to win with my play LOVE AND OTHER FLUSHES. As part of the prize, Maverick Musicals published the play. That led to them publishing another of my plays Farmer Will Swap Combine Harvester For Wife, a play about rural domestic violence.
That play has since been toured in New South Wales and has been attributed with directly helping women to break the cycle of domestic abuse. The play also won the Queensland Government Domestic Violence Prevention Award in 2008. All this only happened because the Noosa One Act Playwriting competition gave me my start in playwriting!"
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council donates prize money of $2500, to be shared among the three finalist playwrights. The Audience's Choice winner is awarded prizemoney and a publishing contract
The competition opens the door for new playwrights, providing a valuable opportunity for their new works to be staged for the first time when the 3 finalist plays are presented at the Noosa Arts One-Act Play Festival. They are also given a chance to workshop their play, following a playreading. In conjunction with the Play Festival, a Playwriting Workshop is also conducted at the theatre. Last years event with Brisbane Playwright Stephen Carleton was well attended by many of the writers who entered the compeition.
