Caution on the water

Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Councillor Tim Dwyer is calling on the boating community not to undertake boating activities during current wet weather conditions and for swimmers and surfers to take extra care.

There is a warning current for people to be aware of debris in the region’s rivers and estuaries.

“Boaties using the Maroochy River need to be aware that there is lots of debris, including some large free floating poles in the river.  Extra caution and an eye on speed is necessary.

“Due to Bureau of Meteorology forecasts of further rain, the loch gates at Pelican Waters have been opened as a flood mitigation measure specifically for the golf course precinct. However, this action will also improve the overall outcome for the Golden Beach to Pelican Waters area.

“It is also important for safety reasons that boats do not use the loch while the gates are open.”

It is expected that after the high tides on Thursday the lochs will return to normal operations. However, the situation will be monitored and the boating community are encouraged to check council’s Facebook and council’s website for updates.

Canal systems around Caloundra and Maroochydore, may see topping of revetment walls by approximately 300mm. The king tide and current severe weather conditions have increased the possibility of localised flooding to properties bordering the canals.

Hyatt beach at Coolum and Maroochy beach are currently closed due to strong currents and rough conditions.

All swimmers should only swim between the flags and surfers are reminded to take extra care in the current conditions.

Listen to local radio for regular updates about conditions and log onto the Bureau of Meteorology website for weather warnings.
