Celebrate NAIDOC Week
2 July 2009 Celebrate NAIDOC Week
Sunshine Coast Council will mark the start of NAIDOC Week with a flag-raising ceremony at Nambour and end the week of Indigenous celebrations with a festival at Cotton Tree Park.
NAIDOC Week is held from 5-12 July and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Mayor Bob Abbot will join the flag-raising ceremony, to be held at the Nambour Library forecourt on Monday 6 July at 1pm. The ceremony is open to the public and will be attended by traditional elders and special guests.
The Mayor said council was proud to be partnering with Indigenous groups, businesses and community groups to bring NAIDOC Week celebrations to the community.
"NAIDOC Week is a chance to look back and acknowledge the enormous contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made to our country," the Mayor said.
"It's about celebrating Indigenous culture and recognising the important role it plays in our community today and into the future."
Sunshine Coast Libraries at Tewantin, Nambour and Caloundra will also be raising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags every day during NAIDOC Week.
A special NAIDOC Day Festival on Sunday 12 July at Cotton Tree Park will be a highlight of the week. The festival begins at 10am and will include traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancing, the "Murri Idol" competition, arts and craft, and market and food stalls.
This year's theme "Honouring our Elders -- Nurturing Our Youth" highlights the importance of Indigenous elders as leaders in the community and role models for youth.
