Coalition's tourism boost to strengthen regional economy

Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss today said a Coalition Government will provide a further $62 million to help support the Australian tourism industry, which will help to strengthen the sector in Wide Bay.

"We live in a great part of Australia that is very popular with tourists. Tourism is a key driver of the Sunshine, Cooloola and Fraser Coasts, providing jobs to local communities. We must do more to support and grow the industry to strengthen the regional economy," Mr Truss said.

"This funding package includes $14 million to provide Regional Tourism Organisations with grants of up to $100,000 per year to promote local tourism to the domestic market.

"A $40 million Tourism Infrastructure and Development Fund will support local projects that help to drive the development of local tourism projects. Applications will be assessed for their potential to contribute to tourism employment and growth." Mr Truss added.

"Tourism employs close to 500,000 Australians and earns $24 billion in export earnings. It contributes $92 billion to our economic activity.

"The Coalition is committed to supporting our industry, in contrast to Labor which has hurt tourism operators through increased taxes, business costs and the abolition of tourism infrastructure programs." Mr Truss said.

Tourism Research Australia will also be provided with $8 million to identify emerging trends and gaps in the market, making our industry more sustainable.

This announcement comes on top of a recent Coalition initiative aimed at attracting attract more business events tourism to Australia. This brings the Coalition's total commitment to the tourism industry to $90 million.

"The more tourists we can attract to our local areas, either through private holidays or business events such as conferences, the greater the economic and job prospects for our towns. More local tourism equals more local jobs, which is good news for Wide Bay."
