Coast lawyer a member of Prime Minister’s Expert Panel
Sunshine Coast lawyer and Managing Director of Ferguson Cannon
Lawyers, Glenn Ferguson was a member of the Expert Panel on the
Constitutional recognition of indigenous Australians which
presented its report to the Prime Minister in Canberra last
week.
Mr Ferguson, a former President of the Law Council of Australia,
the nation’s peak legal body is also Chair of the Council’s
Indigenous Legal Issues Committee.
“I was very honoured to be invited by the Prime Minister in
December 2010 to be part of the expert panel to consider this
important issue for our nation,” Mr Ferguson
said.
The panel, comprised of indigenous and community leaders,
constitutional law experts and parliamentary members carried out
public consultations around Australia to come up with options for
recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the
Australian Constitution.
“I was fortunate to be able to travel throughout our country
consulting Australians from all walks of life as part of the
process and was overwhelmed by the positive attitude of all
Australians to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples in our Constitution,” Mr Ferguson said.
“We are a mature nation which needs to seriously consider this
matter and I look forward to being able to continue advocating
for this important issue and playing my part in achieving a
successful referendum.”
