Community wants to regain control of water assets

Hundreds of people journeyed from across the Sunshine Coast and from surrounding regions to support the launch of the community water campaign at Sunday's Cotton Tree market.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Debbie Blumel said "People are demanding a return to community controlled water assets and were supportive of Community Water.

"Community Water has been specifically designed to take the best of both corporate and community interests. This is underlined by the fact that Community Water is beneficially owned by the community it serves.

"Community Water will be showcasing its approach for the 1200 families at Ridges Peregian Springs."

Cr Blumel said that people were hopeful that signing the petition would bring results.

"The key issue raised by people is the Government's continuing commitment to expensive heavy engineering technology, including desalination, that pumps water over long distances. People know that the cost is going to be foisted on to them as customers.

"The most heartbreaking stories involved pensioners who are getting their first taste of the significant price increases ahead. Many people asked if they would still be charged for the fixed price component of their bills if they disconnected from UnityWater.

In coming weeks, the community water campaign will travel across the Sunshine Coast to Caloundra, Noosa, Nambour and the hinterland.
