Confidence in Queensland economy stays ahead of the nation

Confidence in the Queensland economy has once again stayed ahead of the national outlook according to a new report out today.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland's (CCIQ) survey of business conditions shows that Queensland's confidence rose by five percentage points in the December quarter to 50.9 per cent, ahead of the national economy on 48.6 per cent.

Deputy Premier and Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the report also showed a turnaround in general business conditions with an increase to 49.8, their highest level since March 2010.

"Once again we've seen that Queensland businesses are increasingly confident about our state's economy, despite ongoing uncertainty overseas," Mr Fraser said.

"It's not surprising on the back of recent news that we will return the Budget to surplus one year ahead of schedule.

"The Bligh government understands the pressures that are out there for small businesses, especially on the back of the GFC and last year's natural disasters.

"Despite this Queensland has maintained the lowest payroll tax rate in the country, we also have the most competitive overall tax regime for small to medium businesses, as judged by the independent firm, Pitcher Partners.

"On top of this Blair Davies was brought on last year as the new Business Commissioner to slash red tape and be a voice for small and medium business.

"This move was endorsed by the CCIQ and he is already getting out across the state and meeting with small businesses."
