Council evacuation centres are ready to go if needed

As updated Bureau of Meteorology severe weather warnings forecast ongoing heavy rainfall continuing across the coast leading to the increased potential of localised flooding, council has placed three evacuation centres on standby in readiness for action if needed.

Deputy Local Disaster Coordinator Andrew Ryan said these are the Lake Kawana Community Centre, the Queens Street Community Centre at Caloundra and the Nambour Civic Centre.

“As we learn of the needs of our community, we will determine if we need to open any of these as a rapid response evacuation centre,” Mr Ryan said.

“If members of the community feel they need assistance to evacuate, they should contact the SES on 132 500,” he said.

“At this stage, the Local Disaster Coordination Centre has received reports of some properties being flooded; however, these occupants have made their own arrangements to stay with family and friends,” he said.

“Obviously, we will alert the community via the media – mainly local radio – council’s web pages and other social media if and when these evacuation centres are opened.

“Listen to local radio for regular updates about conditions and log on to the Bureau of Meteorology website for weather warnings.

Council’s Facebook site at www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastCouncil is being updated regularly with information about road closures. You can also follow us on Twitter at @CouncilSCC for updates.

In life threatening situations call Triple Zero (000) and for emergency assistance from SES call 132500.
