Crime spree for the Big Book Club

10 March 2010 Crime spree for the Big Book Club

Sunshine Coast libraries will present one of the hottest female crime writers in Australia -- Katherine Howell -- at the next Big Book Club event at Mooloolaba Surf Club on Monday 22 March.

Since it started, the Big Book Club, hosted by Sunshine Coast Council libraries, has allowed local audiences to get up close with a string of top-selling authors from around Australia and the world. The events are an intimate way to get to know the authors behind some of the best-selling and critically-acclaimed books of our times.

After three years on the Sunshine Coast, the club has brought a string of literary luminaries to local audiences, including:
* Judy Nunn
* Nick Earls
* Kate Morton
* Richard Flanagan
* Toni Jordan
* Monica McInerny
* Steven Carroll
* Stephen M. Irwin
* Tania James
* Craig Silvey

The Big Book Club has a solid following among Sunshine Coast residents who enjoy the humour, wit and insights that only a book's author can deliver.

In this tradition, Katherine Howell will discuss her latest work, Cold Justice, which draws on her background as a Queensland ambulance officer before she embarked on her successful writing career.

It is the story of a teenage girl who stumbles across the body of her classmate hidden amongst the bushes. The killer is never found, but 18 years later, political pressure sees the murder investigation reopened.

Detective Ella Marconi tracks down Georgie Riley, the student who found the body, and who is now a paramedic. Georgie seems to be telling the truth, so why does Ella receive an anonymous phone call insisting that Georgie knows more? The more Ella digs into the past, the more buried secrets and lies are brought to light. Can she track down the killer before more people are hurt?

Katherine's previous books are Frantic, winner of the 2008 Davitt Award for best crime fiction, and The Darkest Hour, which won the 2009 Davitt Readers' Choice Award.

Bookings for this event can be made by phoning Maroochydore Library on 5475 8900, Kawana Library on 5444 8022 or online by credit card on libraries' website.

The event is upstairs at the Mooloolaba Surf Club, with canaps from 6.30pm and Katherine speaking at 7pm.
