CSG Explosion Highlights Need for an Immediate Moratorium
Queensland Party Leader, Aidan McLindon, has today called for
urgent action to impose a moratorium on coal seam gas mining
until the flawed process is properly tested and the potentially
deadly impacts on rural and regional Queensland are
understood.
On Sunday a gas well head began shooting gas and water 90 metres
into the air at an Arrow Energy facility near Dalby, although it
went unreported for 24 hours. Arrow Energy is 100 per cent
foreign owned by PetroChina and Royal Dutch Shell.
According to the Courier Mail Online, an Arrow Energy spokesman
has stated that there have been problems at the site since
drilling started there 10 years ago.
“This explosion is very disappointing because the ALP Government
and the LNP opposition were given an opportunity six months ago
to act for the best interests of Queensland and support The
Queensland Party’s motion for a moratorium. Unfortunately,
instead of imposing a moratorium, the Government and Opposition
worked together to vote against the idea in Queensland Parliament
and both parties are now directly responsible for this event,”
said Mr McLindon.
“The financial desperation of the ALP and the vested interests of
the LNP mean that both of these parties will allow further
foreign-owned companies to enter Queensland and trample the
rights of farmers and property-owners while destroying rural and
regional Queensland.”
“It is time for some real scrutiny of the LNP over this issue.
The ALP was exposed for its incompetence on the ABC 4 Corners
exposé which showed that the chemicals used in the mining process
have not been tested in contravention of state and federal
legislation. Now it is time to really examine the LNP’s approach,
because they have mouthed all the platitudes about protecting
rural and regional Queensland but they have not outlined measure
to ensure this occurs.”
“The only action from the LNP has been to vote against a
moratorium in the Queensland Parliament while sneakily launching
a petition for a moratorium on the very same day. This can only
be seen as a cynical and deceitful attempt to keep the pretence
up that the LNP will look after the interests of rural and
regional Queensland.”
