Cultural Heritage Levy supporting museums and historical societies

Sunshine Coast Council will use funds from the Cultural Heritage Levy to offer two representatives from each community museum and historical society across the region the opportunity to attend the Southeast Queensland Small Museums Conference in Eumundi from 15 to 17 October.
The levy will be used specifically for facilities, programs, projects and activities concerned with the preservation and promotion of the region's history and cultural heritage.  It will also help support the efforts of the region's many community museums.
The Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group was appointed last month to provide strategic guidance on how the funds generated by the new $5 heritage levy will be spent across the Coast.
Sunshine Coast Council's Cultural and Heritage Portfolio holder, Cr Anna Grosskreutz, said about $4000 was allocated from the levy towards funding the professional development opportunity for the region's community museums and historical societies.
"We are using the heritage levy to encourage greater protection, awareness and celebration of cultural heritage given the increasing impacts of growth on cultural sites, places, knowledge and artefacts," Cr Grosskreutz said.
"At the conference, community museum and historical society representatives will learn about how to sustain and promote their museums and collections through the use of new technologies, by creating dynamic exhibitions, linking with the education sector and attracting new volunteers.
"Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with their colleagues in other museums and organisations from throughout Southeast Queensland and share new ideas."
The conference will include workshops on a diverse range of topics, sessions and panel discussions on sustainability in museums, collections, significance assessment, education, technology, volunteers and Eumundi's "green" vision.  Guest speakers from a broad range of backgrounds and specialities will discuss and stimulate ideas about sustainable practices in small museums.
