Cycle network grows to meet community needs
Work has started on the expansion of the region's cycleway networks -- with three new projects set to add almost six kilometres of bike lanes and pathways, connecting Sippy Downs, Buderim and Mountain Creek.
The projects, involve the creation of on-road cycle lanes (within existing kerbs), and new off-road pathways, within the following areas:-
* Sippy Downs -- from Dixon Road, over the Sunshine Motorway overpass, along Sippy Downs Drive to the schools and university (on road only).
* Mountain Creek -- along Karawatha Drive from Molakai Drive to Dixon Road (on road only).
* Buderim -- along Dixon Road from Nyes Crescent to Karawatha Drive (on and off road).
Council's Integrated Transport portfolio holder Vivien Griffin said a well-planned network of on- and off-road cycle routes is essential to council's goal of the Sunshine Coast being Australia's most sustainable region.
"The delivery of these projects will complement council's existing cycle and pathway networks, creating even better links between our communities,'' Cr Griffin said.
These projects are jointly funded through partnerships between
* Sunshine Coast Regional Council
* Transport and Main Roads South East Queensland Transport's Cycle Network Program and the
* Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme.
Division Six Councillor Christian Dickson said the new cycle lanes and pathways will be of huge benefit to residents, including local school and university students alike, and have been endorsed by the Cyclist Group Alliance
"Council is delivering valuable connections between communities as well as some key destinations, including the Mountain Creek schools and TAFE campus and the Sippy Downs schools and the university," Cr Dickson said.
"These projects will add close to six kilometres to one of our region's best cycling networks, connecting three communities -- Buderim, Mountain Creek and Sippy Downs.
Councillor Dickson said that the planned improvements, which will require new line marking in some sections, will ensure the routes cater for future demand not only from motorists but pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
"This will improve safety for all users of these transport corridors. It's an important part of managing the region's growth and delivering services to our community -- while still retaining our area's great lifestyle."
