Dangerous prisoners belong behind bars: Lucas
Andrew Ellis belongs behind bars and the Queensland Government
had already sought to keep him in jail.
Mr Lucas said that the Queensland Government had been seeking to
keep Ellis behind bars since March 8, last year but after two
hearings, in September and October, the court ordered he be
released under strict supervision.
"Clearly, I think that was the wrong decision," Mr Lucas
said.
"That's why the matter is under appeal and was already due to be
heard on February 20.
"Given this prisoner has now breached the conditions of his
supervision order, I would expect that he face the full force of
the law and that supervision order is torn up now police advise
he has been captured."
Mr Lucas said the Queensland Government took the issue of
dangerous prisoners very seriously.
"That's why we have the toughest laws in the country," he
said.
"Our laws have withstood High Court challenge where as other
jurisdictions, like NSW, hav e seen offenders walk free because
their laws were found by the High Court to be against
constitution.
"We will continue to appeal the release of dangerous prisoners
where their release would be inappropriate and if we believe an
error was made any the judge in releasing them."
Attorney-General, Minister for Local Government and Special
Minister of State
The Honourable Paul Lucas
