Empowered pathway needs a name

While they look like your average pedestrian structures, the recently completed pathway and bridge links in Tanah Street East in Mount Coolum are anything but run-of-the-mill. They symbolise a major community victory that the Mt Coolum and Yaroomba communities are keen to celebrate.

Division 8 Councillor Debbie Blumel said a competition was now underway to find an appropriate name for the pathway and bridge through Yaroomba that connects Tanah St East to Warragah Parade.

“The local community fought very hard to change the original plans for this pathway that was to be constructed in an environmentally sensitive area near the foredunes on Tanah Street East,” she said.

“Their battle for the dunal flora and fauna was eventually rewarded when the developer, Lend Lease, agreed to re-route this important link in the Sunshine Coast’s 96 kilometre coastal pathway away from the sensitive dunes. The iconic parabolic dune was of particular concern to local people who were concerned it would erode if vegetation was disturbed.

“We’re now looking for an appropriate name for this special pathway to acknowledge the  passion that earnt the local community this very significant environmental victory.”

Cr Blumel said local community members could submit their suggested names for the pathway on Sunshine Coast Council’s website until the end of January.

“Simply click on the ‘about council’ link then the ‘competitions’ link and fill out a short naming proposal form,” she said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity especially for those community members who battled so hard for their local environment, to come up with a name for this pathway that symbolises their triumph.”

A decision on the winning entry will be made in February.
