Four chosen in state-wide anti-violence message competition

Police Minister Neil Roberts and Acting Deputy Commissioner Andy Henderson have today announced that concepts created by four Queenslanders will be incorporated into the next phase of the One Punch Can Kill advertising campaign.

Mr Roberts said the ideas of Rhiannon Perkins of Joyner, Sophie Halipilias of Victoria Point, Michael Stuer of Morningside, and Stephanie Walsh of Cleveland would be seen across a range of advertising mediums in the coming weeks.

"For some of the winners, the selection of their ideas and concepts to form part of the next phase of the One Punch Can Kill campaign would be bittersweet because their lives have been personally affected by youth violence," Mr Roberts said.

"It is clear to me having seen the concepts submitted that they have drawn on their experiences as the winning entries which are very moving."

Acting Deputy Commissioner Henderson said he was confident the campaign would speak to young people and send the m essage that it only takes one punch to destroy a life.

"With a total of 58 entries, the One Punch Can Kill competition showed that Queenslanders are getting behind the cause and are ready to make a difference to youth violence," Acting Deputy Commissioner Henderson said.

"The response to the competition has been first-rate and as a result the interactive element of the new website will continue to operate even now that the competition has finished."

"I encourage all those who missed out on entering the competition to go online, share their experiences and thoughts on how we can get the message out to offenders and further support the campaign," Commissioner Atkinson said.

The winning entries, together with all submissions, can be viewed via the campaign's official website.

The panel of judges included Generation Y communication experts, campaign stakeholders the Queensland Homicide Victims' Support Group and Matthew Stanley Foundation, members of the Office of Youth and members of the Generation Y age group.

Mr Roberts said the four winners had been invited to take part in the production phase of the advertisements, allowing them to gain an insight into the advertising and creative industries.

"I look forward to seeing the final advertisements across the state and would like to thank all those who entered the competition," he said.

"Youth violence is a serious issue for the Queensland community, and the State Government recognises the need to educate our young people about the dangers and consequences of engaging in this type of anti-social behaviour.

"That's why we provided a further $700,000 for the continuation of the successful One Punch Can Kill Campaign through 2010 and 2011."
