Fraser Island Report Released

During Parliamentary proceedings today, Member for Noosa and Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Glen Elmes released a report which resulted from a discussion paper opened for public comment earlier this year.

Information used to make up the final report came from many sources including 22 formal submissions, a community forum at Hervey Bay, several inspection trips to the Island to speak with locals and many one-on-one and telephone conversations.

New, detailed information is still received almost daily adding to the enormous amount of research material available.

Recommendations included --

* resting parts of the Island on a rotational basis for a couple of months each year;

* local stakeholders and indigenous people to engage and educate visitors;

* re-instatement of the funding for the Eurong sewerage plant; and

* a humane approach to dingo management.

"This report, and the mountains of information that contributed to it, shows that Labor and the Department of Environment and Resource Management have failed the Island and that a radically new approach is needed for its management.

"I can't wait for the election to be over to have the opportunity as Minister to breathe new life into the health of Fraser Island and to ensure the survival of our Australian native dog as a pure and unique species." Glen Elmes said.

  1. Mr Elms, having just finished your Fras.Isle.Report I would like to congratulate you on your surperb presentation. In my opinion you offered a Positive constructive and concise balance of proposals together with actions that addressed both current situations and sensible recommendations that would safeguard a healthy future for Fraser Island.
    Kate Jones and her Department have Dictatorial Diarrhoea and nothing constructive in their 15 year old,out of date reference book. However, you have been out amongst the people, talking and listening to their concerns. You have taken those conserns
    to Parliament on their behalf. On the other side kate Jones ignores the very voters who put her there in the first place.
    Again it is my opinion, the current Labour Government in Q.Land is the most insolent, hypocritical condescending GOVT.ever.
    To top it off we also have D.E.R.M.
    Most people know they exist through Reciprocity, they wave this past voters faces thinking they are too powerful to be challenged.Bring on the next Election.

  2. Thank you & congratulations to you and your staff
    Mr Elmes. The time you have taken to listen, read
    local concerns and actually care enough to bring into parliament has been incredible........We all know Anna Bligh, Kate Jones and their party are ignorant, misinformed and unwilling to care or change.........We look forward to when you are elected and some action can be taken - finally!!!!!
    Thank you again for caring enough about the Fraser Island dingoes to want to change things before they are only just a memory!!!! Good Work!!!!

    YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS - MINISTER!!!!!
    This state - in particular YOUR party is a joke!!!!

  4. While holidaying in Qld, I took my family over to Fraser Island. What a beautiful place to visit. To my delight and sadness we actually had a quick encounter with a dingo. My children, nor I were scared or worried, we just remanded still and let the dingo walk past, stop for a moment to look at us then dissappeared!!
    Although the dingo didn't come up to us, I could
    very clearly see the poor, underweight sight of
    this beautiful creature who was starving and looking for food. I have heard so much about Fraser Island about how beautiful and majestic it was. We were very upset & heartbroken to see such a horrible sight. My kids were quite upset after seeing the poor dingo. To Ms. Kate Jones - Do you realize the main reason come to Fraser Island is to capture a glimpse of a pure dingo in the wild and enjoy the total wonderful experience???????? People all over the world know about Fraser Island and the dingo's - PLEASE DO something NOW - it DOES need changing - and you Have to act................
    I cannot understand how you can PRETEND things
    are fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Thanks goodness for people like Mr Glen Elmes.
    Cannot wait until he gets voted in and can make some well-deserved changes. Minister Kate Jones seriously must live on Mars!!!! She is SO distant from the REAL world and what is going on!!!!! The Pure Fraser Island Dingo's are starving, being abused and dying...
    Must be nice to only read and listen to want you
    want!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kate Jones and party must be kicked out........Common-sense and compassion
    MUST prevail!!!!!

  6. Glen, Ted and support staff, we are all very proud of you for the great deal of time and effort you have put into this report. Of course Minister Jones has been quick to respond. If only she had been this quick to respond to the actual problem it would be solved by now. To say that 'a compilation of other people's ideas is not a policy' is pure hypocrisy! Her alleged policy comprises nothing but anecdotal evidence given by her own staff or paid for by her own expert who she keeps paying to review the same old outdated information. And she accuses you of being out of touch?

    You are the people that have taken the time to actually talk to the real experts.

    You are the people with fresh new ideas which you are prepared to action immediately.

    You have been overt with everything you have done.

    KJ must forget her statement in times gone by about the dolphin feeding in TCB.

    This time next year she will be but a memory herself, and at last the Island will have appropriate management.
