Global Resurgence in Knitting Fills Peregian House With Woollen Goods for Charity
The global resurgence of knitting as a creative means of
connecting with oneself and others has seen Peregian Beach
Community House fill with beanies, blankets, scarves and
bears.
The Knit for Charity group is about to send another “shipload” to
charities serving the needy on the Sunshine Coast and throughout
Australia, plus woollen bears to comfort babies orphaned by AIDS
in Sudanese Africa.
Knit for Charity organiser Maureen Harmony described hand making
garments as an intrinsically human gesture dating back thousands
of years.
“You’re wrapping someone in your thoughts and love,” Maureen
said.
Member Pat Isaacs said there was a world of difference between
machine-made and knitted clothing.
“These things are made with our thoughts and feelings so when
people put them on they know someone cares for them,’’ Pat
said.
“Along with recycling, all home-crafts are coming back in. It’s
meditative and addictive. ”
Group members also knit at home and bring in their “squares” to
twice-monthly gatherings at the House.
“I knit every night in front of the television, it’s very
therapeutic,’’ Joan Henderson said.
Maureen said the goods have always gone directly to the genuinely
needy via established charities since the group began in August
2011.
“We can provide patterns but we can be as creative as we like,”
Maureen said.
The group welcomes new members and donations of wool, needles and
woollen goods.
Anyone wanting to learn how to knit or crochet is welcome to come
along to enjoy companionship, creative activity and morning tea
on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 9.30am –
11.30am.
Peregian Beach Community House is on the corner of Woodland Drive
and David Low Way, Peregian.
