Minister for Education and Training
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Griffith Vice Chancellor to Chair Bullying Alliance
Griffith University Vice Chancellor Ian O'Connor will be the independent chair of the Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence, Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson announced today.
Mr Wilson said Professor O'Connor would lead the action group's first meeting on Thursday.
"Prof O'Connor will drive outcomes from this alliance of the independent, Catholic and State school sectors, parent groups, teacher organisations and Principal associations," he said.
"We need to take swift action on this serious issue, but we also want it to be effective.
"That's why we have gathered together those who have first-hand experience of dealing with these issues on the ground - at schools and in the community.
"They will be joined by guest speakers and collaborators who specialise in researching the effects of bullying and violence, and developing programs to help address these issues.
"By combining their knowledge and experience I believe we have the best chance of finding innovative, effective and practical solutions to this difficult and complex problem."
Mr Wilson said the first meeting today would examine the report by Ken Rigby, Enhancing Responses to Bullying in Queensland Schools.
"At the first meeting of the Alliance today, I will ask members to explore a range of issues affecting the safety and welfare of students such as behaviour management, bullying and violence," he said.
"One of their first tasks will be to consider Dr Ken Rigby's recommendations. I will also ask them to recommend practical solutions to respond to bullying and violence in schools."
Mr Wilson said Prof O'Connor brought a wealth of experience to the table.
"Professor O'Connor has a background in teaching and learning, social work and social policy and he has done extensive research in social inclusion, juvenile justice, child welfare and in the future directions of social work and human services," Mr Wilson said.
"He has served as a consultant to, or as a member of, various government and non-government bodies.
"I know his considerable skills will help ensure the Alliance achieves positive outcomes for the community.
"I look forward to working with Professor O'Connor and the rest of the Alliance."
