Gympie volunteers rewarded
Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Services Peta-Kaye Croft in Gympie today officially handed over a new vehicle, opened a new training room, and recognised long serving members of the Rural Fire Service (RFS).
"Today I acknowledged 20 courageous rural fire service volunteers who have served their communities for decades and commissioned $72,000 worth of resources to assist State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service volunteers," Ms Croft said.
"The new training room valued at $37,000 is attached to the vehicle bay at the Veteran Rural Fire Brigade Station and will prove extremely valuable for rural firefighters across Gympie to carry out training and incident control activities.
"This is a significant investment by the Bligh Government, rewarding our hardworking volunteers for their ongoing commitment to the community," she said.
Ms Croft also handed over a new four-wheel-drive twin cab vehicle which had been recently been purchased for the Glastonbury State Emergency Service.
"The handover of this new vehicle was part of the State Government's 2009 'Support our Heroes' election commitment," Ms Croft said.
"This vehicle will assist the members from the Glastonbury SES group to carry out their day-to-day operational duties.
Regional Manager of Rural Operations for the North Coast Region Peter Hollier paid tribute to the 20 RFS volunteers who received their National Service, Diligent and Ethical Service medals, and clasps today.
"The work of rural fire service volunteers is held in high regard by the local Gympie community and today was a great opportunity to recognise the members who have served with pride and dedication for a number of years," Mr Hollier said.
"Whether it is community education, property protection, or performing hazard reduction operations to prevent the spread of fires, their experience and knowledge helps maintain and enhance community safety acros s Gympie."
Emergency Management Queensland Regional Director for the North Coast Region Peter Twomey also acknowledged the benefit of the new vehicle and took the opportunity to acknowledge the work of SES volunteers.
"SES volunteers in this region have to be prepared to respond to an extremely diverse range of incidents including road crash rescue, a search for missing people, a rescue of stranded bushwalkers, flood response efforts and much more," Mr Twomey said.
"This vehicle will enhance SES capability to assist the Gympie community when they need us most."
