Have your say on the future of Coast waste

January 22 2009 Waste not want not

Do you have an innovative idea on how the Sunshine Coast can reduce, reuse and recycle? Then the Sunshine Coast Council would like to hear from you.

Councillor Keryn Jones, head of council's Environment Portfolio, is looking for people to be part of a Regional Waste Strategy Taskforce.

"Waste is a major issue for the Sunshine Coast as it is in many places around the world. Climate change, carbon and methane emissions, peak oil, resource depletion and pollution are all at critical turning points globally," Cr Jones said.

"The changes we make today in how we manage our waste will determine the quality of the food, water, soil, air and environment for generations to come.

"We want to see the Sunshine Coast retain its natural beauty so we must find ways to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill while creating more sustainable systems to manage our waste streams," she said.

Councillor Jones, who will chair the group, is urging community organisations, industry representatives and individuals to nominate for the taskforce.

"We want to hear what innovative, energy saving, creative ideas are out there, in particular about ways we can reduce waste and how to manage what we do use in the best possible way."

"I look forward to developing the recommendations of the taskforce and seeing the Sunshine Coast become Australia's most sustainable region," she said.

Applications close 3 February 2009 at 4.30pm. Information kits and nominations forms are available at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, in person at any of council's Customer Service Centres, or by calling 1300 007 272 (local calls excluding mobiles) or 5475 7272 (outside the local area and from mobiles).
