Improved safety, more transparency in Queensland child care services
Every Queensland child care service will be required to maintain and display a compliance log book under new laws introduced into Parliament today.
Premier Anna Bligh said the new laws would ensure parents had easy access to information about centres, staff and safety issues.
"Parents are entrusting their children to the care of these services, and they want to be confident their children will be safe and well looked after," she said.
"Parents have a right to know this information.
"This is about giving parents access to a range of information to help them make decisions about who they allow to look after their children.
"The logbooks are the next step in our major reform of the sector to increase accountability, safety and quality, following the launch of the child care compliance website on February 1.
"The website provides detailed information about child care services which have seriously or consistently breached the high standards we set for the care of our children.
"With the click of a mouse parents can now easily find out if their local child care service has seriously or repeatedly breached the laws and if so, what action was taken by the government.
"For instance, if a service's licence has been suspended or revoked, this information will be published on the Internet.
"We know parents are hungry for this information - the phenomenal response to the Federal Government's My School website, and the positive reaction to the Queensland Government's release of school by school NAPLAN results is proof of that.
"Knowledge is power and transparency improves performance."
Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the log books would contain information about breach notices that the service receives from the Office for Early Childhood Education and Care.
"This includes the type of notice, why it was issued and details of any action required along with when the problem was fixed," he said.
Mr Wilson said under the new laws all services would have a log book on display from July 2010.
"This is about informing parents, improving the quality of care and boosting safety.
"We want to give every Queensland child the flying start they deserve.
"Quality early childhood education plays a key role in helping children succeed at school and in life.
"That's why we're focused on improving the quality right from the word go."
