Independent Expert to Lead Security Review
Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
05/03/2010
INDEPENDENT EXPERT TO LEAD SECURITY REVIEW
An independent external expert will be engaged to lead a security review team on a state-wide audit of correctional centres, Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts announced today.
Mr Roberts said the formation of the team followed a recommendation of the Chief Inspector of Prisons in his interim report into the disappearance and subsequent recovery of a gun at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre in Far North Queensland.
"Work was underway on forming this review team when a cell key was located in a residential section of Maryborough Correctional Centre at 10am today during a routine security sweep," Mr Roberts said.
"Despite security at MCC not being compromised, this incident is totally unacceptable and is the second major security breach at one of our correctional centres in recent months.
"That's why I have instructed the Commissioner for Corrections to engage an independent, external expert to lead the security review team, and for a thoroug h review to be undertaken as soon as possible."
Mr Roberts said an independent expert would bring a fresh set of eyes to the review and would complement the Queensland Corrective Services personnel on the team.
"I am confident that Queensland has one of the most secure correctional systems in the country," he said.
"Queensland Corrective Services has invested heavily in security infrastructure in recent years.
"There has not been an escape from secure custody since 1998."
"But all systems need to be constantly reviewed.
"Security is a critical issue and we need to make sure that we are constantly reviewing, changing and updating our arrangements and procedures."
