Industry welcomes new Regional Tourism Structure for Region

18 March 2010 INDUSTRY WELCOMES NEW REGIONAL TOURISM STRUCTURE FOR REGION

The Sunshine Coast tourism industry has welcomed news of Council's decision to endorse the Tourism Transition Board's (TTAB) and industry sanctioned recommendations for the structure of the new, regional tourism authority for the Sunshine Coast.

After twelve months of industry consultation the new Destination Management Organisation (DMO) is expected to be operational by July 2010 and will replace Tourism Sunshine Coast. It will work primarily in a strategic marketing, research and developmental role with four, 'destination desks' charged with marketing and developing specific geographic areas as part of the greater Sunshine Coast brand.

After reviewing the TTAB's recommendations and being involved as part of the industry consultation for the reform process, Caloundra Tourism and discover maroochy.com have opted to disband to make way for the new destination desks with Tourism Noosa continuing to operate but now forming the new, expanded Northern region destination desk.

Tourism Noosa Chair, Michael Donovan said that industry was looking forward to now getting on with the job and to working with the new DMO to help it complete their first task, namely a 10 year regional Strategic Tourism Plan. The plan will include annual business plans informed by feedback from each of the destination desks.

"The new Northern region is keen to work with the other newly formed destination desks in order to generate more exposure and more business both individually and for the Sunshine Coast as a whole," Michael said.

Mike Wilkinson, Chairman of Caloundra Tourism said that members had been extensively engaged in the reform process and could see great opportunities for growing Caloundra's and the Sunshine Coast's brand under the new structure.

A member of the new Hinterland region destination desk and Chairman of Tourism Sunshine Coast, John Atkin said that he was ecstatic about the hinterland now being recognised as a destination in its own right, one that offered distinctly different experiences to that of the sea and sand coast culture.

TTAB Chairman, Michael Arnett thanked the industry for its assistance to date.

"We are grateful to industry for working so closely with us to help us to develop the new future of Sunshine Coast regional tourism," he said.
