International Women's Day theme announced

Minister for Women Margaret Keech is delighted to today announce the theme for the 2009 International Women's Day: Our Women, our State.

International Women's Day is held annually on 8 March.

Mrs Keech said with Queensland celebrating its 150th Birthday the theme aims to celebrate the contributions women have made to Queensland during the last 150 years.

"This year Queensland is celebrating Q150 - its 150th anniversary of independence from New South Wales as a colony," Mrs Keech said.

"It's time to reflect on the struggles and achievements of past Queensland women as inspiration to shape tomorrow's Queensland.

"Many women from across Queensland and from all walks of life played an integral role in shaping Queensland since it's separation from New South Wales 150 years ago.

"2009 International Women's Day is the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to those women."

Mrs Keech said the challenges Queensland women have overcome during the last 150 years can be a significant source of inspiration for today's girls and young women.

"Many of the rights Queensland women may take for granted in today's society are directly attributed to the efforts and contributions of those that came before us," she said

"From the early struggles of the women of the labour movement to the foundation of equal opportunities for women.

"International Women's Day in 2009 is a timely opportunity for all Queensland girls and women to consider how they will contribute to Queensland's future."

While International Women's Day is officially celebrated worldwide on 8 March, the Bligh Government's Office for Women will be embarking on a range of initiatives to celebrate Q150 and International Women's Day throughout 2009.

"The Bligh Government's Toward Q2 strategy is creating a fairer Queensland for all Queenslanders," Mrs Keech said.

"I strongly encourage all women to get involved and reflect on how they will help define Q2 in the same way our foremothers have shaped the Queensland we all enjoy today."
