Kawana surf club thanked for supporting clean-up operations
18 March 2009 Kawana surf club thanked for supporting clean-up operations
The Sunshine Coast Council has thanked the members and staff of the Kawana Surf Life Saving Club for supporting the oil spill clean-up operations on that part of the coast.
Acting Sunshine Coast Mayor Tim Dwyer today said support from the club for operations being coordinated by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) had delivered "great benefits, sooner than would otherwise have been possible".
Cr Dwyer said it was anticipated that the patrolled Buddina section of the beach will be reopened by the weekend.
"The surf club allowed MSQ, council and other agencies to run an operations post from their property and many of the club members volunteered their time to help," Cr Dwyer said.
"This helped the agencies involved, including council, to achieve as much as they did over the past few days -- and we thank the club for their support."
MSQ will continue to monitor Kawana Beach for the next couple of days to make sure there are no further oil deposits. MSQ is the lead agency responsible for coordinating the oil spill clean up. People seeking any further information should contact MSQ on 1800 216 723.
