Kids Welcome takes the prize
Kids Welcome to Queensland author Sarah Pye was crowned Sunshine Coast Small Business Woman of the Year in an award ceremony at the Hyatt Coolum on Saturday night (August 14).
Sarah said it was a heady experience to be awarded such a prize in a room of over 300 exceptional business leaders. "Recognition for the hard work and innovation of Kids Welcome is like the icing on the cake," she said.
Sarah decided to create guidebooks for families when travelling with her daughter Amber. She noticed there was a lack of information on what was suitable for children and wanted to make it easier to plan a family holiday. Her inspiration and drive came from two extraordinary parents who took her and her brother out of school at the age of 13 to sail around the world. She spent the next five years being 'boat-schooled' and Sarah said this experience shaped the way she looks at the world.
"I learnt that risks are worth taking... that with the support of family I can do just about anything, and that there's a vast difference between schooling and education," she said in her acceptance speech.
Sarah thanked her parents for taking such a courageous leap of faith and hopes she can be as inspirational a parent to her daughter (and chief expert) Amber.
Sarah is busy writing her next guidebook, Kids Welcome to New South Wales which is expected to hit the shelves early next year. E books of Kids Welcome to Queensland will be available before the next school holidays and will be available for purchase at Kids Welcome website.
"Maureen and Tony Wheeler started Lonely Planet in their Melbourne garage," Sarah said, "maybe one day Kids Welcome will be just as successful."
