Kookaburra's captain Jamie Dwyer wins sporting excellence award

Queensland sports night of nights has capped off an amazing year for local athletes, especially Kookaburra's captain Jamie Dwyer.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves presented Jamie with the 2010 Peter Lacey Award for Sporting Excellence at tonight's Queensland Academy of Sport ceremony held at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

"The Peter Lacey Award is one of the highest accolades a Queensland athlete can receive, and after a stellar year on the hockey field including at the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Jamie is a deserving winner," Mr Reeves said.

"Jamie was up against some stiff competition, beating out top athletes including Jessica Schipper, Sally Pearson, Emily Seebohm, Madonna Blyth, Christian Sprenger, Michael Hepburn, Blake Cochrane and Matthew Belcher.

"Jamie had an incredible year on the hockey field, captaining the Kookaburra's to win the Champions Trophy, the World Cup and the recent Delhi Commonwealth Games.

"Delhi was Jamie's third Commonwealth Games, where the team won its fourth consecutive gold medal.

"With more than 230 caps for Australia, Jamie captained the Kookaburras to their 11th Champions Trophy title, fittingly scoring the final goal of the competition; and is the reigning World Player of the Year, an honour he was also awarded in 2004 and 2007.

"Jamie returned home to Australia from his international hockey commitments to play in the 2010 Australian Hockey League and as co-captain, led the Queensland Blades to victory over the NSW Waratahs.

"This win was especially sweet as the Blades were runner-up in the 2009 season."

Jamie Dwyer is among the crme de la crme of Queensland athletes, with previous Peter Lacey award winners including Susie O'Neill, Geoff Huegill, Grant Hackett, Kieren Perkins, Kerrie Meares, Geoff Trappett, Jodie Henry, Leisel Jones, Emma Snowsill, Libby Trickett, Stephanie Rice and Emma Moffatt.

Mr Reeves said Peter Lacey was a surf lifesaving legend.

"Peter won 14 World Championship medals before passing away in 1997," he said.

"A founding father of the QAS, the Peter Lacey Award for Sporting Excellence ensures Peter's name and legacy lives on and remains associated with the highest level of sport in Queensland.

Other winners on the night included:

*    Tim Conrad - winner of the QAS Coach of the Year for his outstanding work with the QAS Rowing Program.

*    QAS Triathlon Program - winner of the Sport Program of the Year. Head Coach Stephen Moss accepted the award, which recognises the program that had the most athletes representing on state and national teams while also consistently utilising the facilities at the Academy. The award includes a $20,000 budget incentive for the further development of the program.
