Labour Day Essay Competition

Why do we have a public holiday on the first Monday in May? Is it important to today's youth? Each year on Labour Day we celebrate the achievements the labour movement has made in the lives of workers. But is the day important for the future of our youth or not?

The Noosa branch of the Labor Party has announced an essay competition on just this topic which is open to all 13-17 year olds in the Noosa district. The Alex Lubek ($100) and Claude Batten ($50) prizes are in memory of two local Labor Party stalwarts and will be awarded to the two best essays received before Friday 23rd April.

Local Labor party spokesperson Brian Stockwell, said our youth may recognise Claude's name having seen the park named in his honour on the Noosa Spit. Claude spent the last years of his life helping to create the park and enlisted many volunteers to the cause. But his commitment to the community was built on a lifetime of commitment to workers and the labour movement.

These prizes aim to stimulate our youth to think about the whether Labour Day is important to them and their working future or not. Many high school students are already enjoying the protections of award systems in their part-time employment after hard fought battles of the past, but is celebrating these battles still relevant to today's society? Similarly teenagers already in the full-time workforce may wish to record their views.

Entries should be no longer than 500 words in length and be e-mailed to or sent by mail to P.O.Box 733, Tewantin,4566.
