Landmark pay rise: Queensland to get its fair share
The Bligh Government has applauded today's Fair Work Australia
landmark decision to increase wages for community services
workers, acknowledging the sector's vital work in
Queensland.
Community Services Minister Karen Struthers praised the decision
benefiting social, community and disability workers throughout
Queensland and the rest of the country.
"This follows in the footsteps of the historic pay equity
decision made by the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission
in 2009," Ms Struthers said.
"Queenslanders should be very proud our state has led the way in
making conditions fairer for hardworking community sector
staff."
Ms Struthers said the Bligh Government was committed to ensuring
Queenslanders get their fair share of the Federal Government's $2
billion commitment to support wage increases.
"We acted quickly in 2009, allocating $414 million over four
years to ensure Queensland non-government organisations were able
to pass on a pay rise. This funding is ongoing at $125 million a
year," Ms Struthers said.
"We will continue to work with our federal colleagues to make
sure Queenslanders working in this industry get the support they
deserve."
Ms Struthers said the Bligh Government has a strong record of
supporting the sector which plays an important role in supporting
the most vulnerable.
"In the last six years, our investment in community services has
grown 160 per cent to $1.647 billion per annum.
"This record investment stands in stark contrast to the LNP who
have shown complete contempt for community services workers with
no policy, no funding and no commitment.
"Conservative governments have proven their lack of commitment on
this issue, back-flipping on election promises to support pay
equity in both NSW and VIC.
"Community services should be rightly concerned about what
Campbell Newman would do in Queensland.
"It's clear the LNP is a risk t o all hardworking community
services workers who deserve a pay rise."
