Langbroek Gets It Wrong. Again!
Maryborough Correctional Centre is currently operating under
capacity and there is only one prisoner being housed in a nearby
police watchhouse, Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts said
today.
"The facts once again disprove comments made today by LNP
Corrective Services spokesman John-Paul Langbroek. Again he has
been caught out making it up as he goes along," Mr Roberts
said.
"The Maryborough Correctional Centre has the capacity to house
500 prisoners and I am advised that the centre expects that it
will be housing 493 prisoners at the end of today," Mr Roberts
said.
"Further, I am advised that there is only one prisoner in the
Bundaberg watchhouse who is suitable for placement at
Maryborough.
"However, this prisoner was only in court this morning where he
was remanded in custody. It is anticipated that he will be
transferred to Maryborough Correctional Centre on Monday."
Mr Roberts said that thanks to good forward planning by su
ccessive Labor Governments, Queensland had plenty of spare
capacity in its prison system.
"Mr Langbroek and the LNP are hypocrites on the issue of prisons
management.
"The utilisation of prison built capacity under Labor has been
around 85%, whereas under The National Party, prisons were
overcrowded and operated at around 15% over capacity.
"The Liberal/National Party's mismanagement of prisons also
resulted in excessive drug taking and regular escapes, including
12 prisoners from high security prisons in their last year in
office.
"Under the Liberal National Party, the rate of positive random
drug tests was around 12% whereas under Labor it's been reduced
to 2.5%."
Mr Roberts challenged the LNP to release its prisons
policy.
"It's time for John-Paul Langbroek to tell the people of
Queensland what an LNP government would do in the area of
corrective services should it be elected," he said.
"However, Queenslanders should n't hold their breath. The LNP
doesn't have a corrective services policy nor are they prepared
to tell Queenslanders how they would fund their policies.
"As his media release today proves, all John-Paul Langbroek and
the LNP have are misleading media releases, thought bubbles and
motherhood statements."
