Let's Celebrate What's Great At The 2012 Australia Day Festvial

For South East Queenslanders, the Parklands at South Bank is the place to be this AustraliaDay with a jam packed program of events planned, Premier Anna Bligh announced today.

"On our national day of celebration, Australians will be out in force with their family and friends, celebrating all that's great about our wonderful country," Ms Bligh said.

"I encourage you to join in community celebrations across the state.

"The Queensland Government is a proud supporter of Australia Day activities and after the cancellation of many events in 2011 because ofthe devastating floods, it's very exciting that the 2012 Australia Day Festival at South Bank is back, on track and looking better than ever.

"Activities start at 10 am in the Suncorp Piazza, where the diverse and vibrant religious faiths from across Brisbane are celebrated through the Australia Day Multi-Faith ceremony.

"You can view the Australia Day Flag Raising ceremony on the Cultural Forecourt from 11 am. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide support to the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Army Band Brisbane as we raise the Australian, Queensland, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

"The ceremony will conclude in spectacular fashion at midday with a 21 gun salute and flypast by the F/A-18F Super Hornets to mark the significance of our national day.

"A highlight of the festival will be the extreme ski show along the Brisbane River," Ms Bligh said.

"This is a first for the Brisbane Australia Day Festival, and I encourage you to take a place along the Clem Jones Promenade to view one of four shows throughout the afternoon."

There are many other great entertainment options on offer at this year's festival. You can take a stroll back in time on the Cultural Forecourt. Try your hand panning for gold, make your own stockman's hat and learn about long forgotten crafts from an Aussie bushman.

The Suncorp Piazza will be pulsing with sound and movement as some of Queensland's most talented community groups entertain audiences throughout the day. Creative workshops and displays along with the Piazza program will run throughout the Parklands from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Little Stanley Street precinct will be buzzing with a special Australia Day Young Designers Markets and

The Aussie Backyard proudly presented by The Courier-Mail will be the perfect space to chill out and enjoy some time with family and friends.

"The AusSounds Concert co-presented by the Queensland Government and Australian Unity on the Cultural Forecourt will feature Christina Parie from X Factor 2011 and the stars of Channel Ten's brand new TV show Young Talent Time.

"To top off an amazing array of Australia Day entertainment, as night falls, the South Bank reach of the Brisbane River will light up in a dazzling display of fireworks at 7.30 pm.

"With all these entertainment options on offer for Australia Day, I encourage you to plan your day with family and friends and head to the Parklands at South Bank to celebrate what's great about Australia," said Ms Bligh.
