Library Chair wins Australia Day Award
One of Australia's best-known language experts and Library Board
of Queensland Chair, Emeritus Professor Roly Sussex, has been
named in the Australia Day 2012 Honours List.
Professor Sussex has received a Medal of the Order of Australia
(OAM) for his services to the development and understanding of
languages in Australia.
Arts Minister Rachel Nolan congratulated Professor Sussex on
receiving the prestigious honour.
"Roly has dedicated his life's work to the development and
understanding of languages in Australia and it is wonderful to
see recognition of this," Ms Nolan said.
"He is a master of the English language, an enthusiastic student
of many languages and a warm and generous man. We are fortunate
to have his passion and expertise on our Board."
Professor Sussex has served as Chair of the Library Board of
Queensland, the governing body of the State Library, since
2009.
He is a well-known language expert, regularly commenting about
language in our society on ABC radio, and in The
Courier-Mail.
Born in Melbourne, Professor Sussex lived in New Zealand, the UK
and Czechoslovakia before becoming foundation Professor of
Russian at the University of Melbourne in 1977.
He moved to Queensland in 1989 to become Professor of Applied
Language Studies at the University of Queensland. He retired from
the University in 2010 and is now Emeritus Professor.
Ms Nolan said Professor Sussex is also a visiting professor at
the Xinjiang Normal University in China, and President of the
Alliance Française of Brisbane and now an Australia Day
Ambassador.
"Roly is a committed defender of the English language in
Australia and an energetic campaigner for the study of second
languages," she said.
"The State Library is also especially proud that Roly is a
Queensland Ambassador of the National Year of Reading
2012."
