Mark Jameison Mayoral Candidate - POLICY#5 - Environment

Today mayoral candidate, Mark Jamieson reaffirmed his commitment to environmental protection and preservation of the Coasts biodiversity when releasing his policy on the Environment.

“The one thing that unites Coast residents more than almost any other is the maintenance of our healthy environment”, Mr. Jamieson stated “the natural features and beauty that has attracted us to the Sunshine Coast must be maintained and managed for the benefit of those who follow”.

“It really underpins our Sunshine Coast way of life and is at the heart of our identity” Mr. Jamieson said

“I’m an advocate for a balance between the environment and our economy because the two in harmony will serve our community in so many ways. For too long we have had a “pendulum approach” swinging wildly between the two objectives and never settling for equilibrium”, he said.

“Our environment along with our societal values and culture are more likely to be sustained and nurtured when we have a sound economic base which provides prosperity and long term financial security for our residents. The local economic downturn experienced over the last four years has made it much harder for residents without a job to enjoy and contribute to the maintenance of our number one asset” he added

We enjoy a tremendous climate, abundant open space, fantastic beaches and waterways and a hinterland that among many attributes is capable of contributing to our future food security.

Currently we have a number of challenges on which we must focus including erosion, flood mitigation, river water quality, silt and runoff, salinity, air quality, litter and the preservation of riparian zones, green space and biodiversity to name a few.

Council needs to carefully define how our “Natural Advantage” will be maintained as we manage the inevitable growth expected over the next 20 years.

Mr. Jamieson said he acknowledge the work undertaken by the current council around ecological sustainability covering water, biodiversity, climate change and waste and consider it a good base from which to progress.

“Our environment will be supported and preserved by a planned approach to coastal land management, catchment and estuary management, stored water and recycling together with an emissions reduction plan that our community will adopt.” Mr. Jamieson said

“In addition we will develop key environmental indicators and communicate these to the public so we all understand how we are travelling to plan” he concluded
