Maroochy Wetlands 20th Birthday Celebrations
Coast
residents are invited to celebrate an environmental milestone by taking
part in the 20th birthday activities at the Maroochy Wetlands this
Saturday.
The Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary will mark its second
decade as a key environmental contributor maintaining and preserving the
Coast's extensive wildlife.
The event runs from 11am to 2pm, Saturday 11 September at Sports Road, Bli Bli.
Visitors
are invited have a lunchtime picnic in the sanctuary, view the displays
and walk the boardwalk to explore wet and dry eucalypt forests,
rainforest, melaleuca forest, casuarina woodland, salt marsh and
mangroves.
The wetlands has one of south-east Queensland's
largest stands of Mangrove Fern, Acrostichum speciosum, which grows
amongst the melaleucas.
You can watch over 200 species of birds,
as well as crabs, butterflies and other wildlife species that make the
wetlands their home.
Estuarine wetlands provide fertile grounds
for a wealth of marine and native plants and animals as they are
inundated by seasonal freshwater floods and by salty tides twice a day. A
local, which is also the sanctuary logo, is the fiddler crab, with its
distinct large orange pincer claw.
Visitors arriving by car
should park at the designated parking areas along Sports Road, where a
shuttle bus service will provide a pick-up and drop off service to the
wetlands sanctuary entrance.
