Mayoral Policy #4

In his quest to deliver a better way and a better future, Mayoral candidate, Mark Jamieson today proposed a strategic change in the organisational structure of council. To increase the focus on broadening the region’s economic base the aspiring mayor argues that strategic economic development must take a greater prominence if we are to meet employment needs of the future.

“The Sunshine Coast Business Council has already declared the need for 250,000 jobs by 2031 to satisfy the projected population base. The rapid introduction, adoption and obsolesce of technology together with new biotech,  eco and service industries will insure the creation of many new business and commercial ventures leading to expanded employment categories” He said. “The challenge will be interpreting the future and how we prepare now by shaping our training, education and skills development in concert with State and Federal Governments.”

To assist in that preparation the portfolio of Economic Development will be elevated from Manager Level, to Executive Director Level reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. This will lift the importance of economic development within the Council to the appropriate level of prominence and guarantee issues and opportunities are fully and constructively evaluated.

The current council has acknowledged the vital role of this portfolio in its policy framework objective “of creating a robust and productive economy” and I believe its elevation is vital and overdue Mr. Jamieson said “Development applications requiring fast-tracking for purposes of economic improvement and expansion will be managed by the Economic Development Unit.” Mr. Jamieson said
