Minister for Child Safety Must Act to Prevent Ritalin Abuse

The Queensland Party spokesman for Child Safety, Family and Communities, Ron Wadforth, today said that the Minister for Child Safety and Sport must restore Queenslander’s confidence that children in state care are being appropriately treated by implementing measures to ensure that children are not being administered Ritalin against the manufacturers’ safety regulations.

“The Minister must address concerns about Ritalin, commonly known as 'kiddie cocaine', which is being administered to children in foster care with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) against the manufacturer’s safety guidelines. Surely, to protect both the children and the Department, the Minister should ensure that children in state-care are not prescribed medication in violation of safety guidelines.”

“The Minister for Child Safety and Sport put the responsibility back onto the shoulders of health professionals. It’s frightening enough to think that paediatricians and doctors are ignoring labels, but the fact of the matter is foster children are in the state’s care and our government writes the policies and sets the boundaries, not health professionals.”

"I don’t know that any parents would accept their children being administered Ritalin against manufacturers’ advice but it seems that the Minister is happy to unquestioningly accept that children under his responsibility should be administered these powerful drugs against safety directives.”

“Queensland’s foster children are not guinea pigs and failure to ensure that drugs are not being over-prescribed or wrongly prescribed means the Government is failing in its duty of care.”

  1. So where is the evidence to support this assertion?
It is way too easy to dress up rhetorical statements in a way that insinuates that there is a problem that does not exist. Maybe that abuse of journalistic power should be investigated.
