Mooloolaba Ocean Swim -- making a big splash
11 March 2010 Mooloolaba Ocean Swim -- making a big splash
With demand for triathlon places at a premium in the annual Mooloolaba Triathlon the supporting events surrounding the three day festival also continue to attract a cross section of serious running and swimming enthusiasts keen to be part of this great weekend.
The Mooloolaba Ocean Swim is no exception as it continues to grow in stature and competitor numbers each year.
The Mooloolaba Ocean Swim forms part of the three day sporting spectacular of the Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival held from Friday 26 -- Sunday 28 March.
Managing Director of USM Events, Garth Prowd said we decided to introduce a swim event to maximise the exposure and make use of one of Mooloolaba's biggest draw cards - Mooloolaba Beach. We wanted to encourage patronage to both the swim and the Surf Lifesaving Club, offering locals a chance to be part of the festival.
The supporting events on the Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival Program offer locals a chance to be part of the festival without having to tackle the triathlon. They can then enjoy all the action trackside as the giants of triathlon do battle.
Organisers are keen to attract the support of local swimmers and urge them to get their entries in early and not miss out.
The swim is not just for the elite but encourages people of all ages and abilities with categories from Under 13 to the more mature 80+.
In past years, the swim has attracted some big names in distance swimming including, Brendan Capell, Josh Santacaterina, Cameron Smith, Melissa Gorman and local Ironman champion Dean Mercer.
Trent Grimsey will have a task on his hands in defending his title in the toughest of conditions from David Browne and brother Cody.
In the women's field it is likely to be a battle between three time winner Melissa Gorman and Sarah Windsor.
