Most of Coast's beaches in the clear
19 March 2009 Most of Coast's beaches in the clear
The majority of Coast's beaches have now been given the all clear and reopened after temporarily being closed due to the oil spill last week.
Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) approved the reopening of both Twin Waters and Mudjimba beaches today, meaning there are now 18 council lifeguard patrolled Sunshine Coast beaches open.
Today's clean up operations will be focused on the beaches at Kawana (Buddina), Wurtulla and north of Mudjimba.
It is anticipated that all remaining patrolled beaches will be opened over the next few days. People are advised the best way to access the opened beaches are via the beach access points closest to the Surf Life Saving Clubs.
While clean up operations have been successful for most beaches, residents are advised that if they see what they believe to be oil remnants, please immediately inform the lifeguards on patrol.
Anyone who gets oil spill material on their skin should wash it off with soap and water. Officials have said that brief skin contact with the material is unlikely to cause any adverse effects. If residents have health concerns or are suffering effects they think may be related to the oil spill seek medical attention, or call Queensland Health on 13 43 25 84.
Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is the lead agency responsible for coordinating the oil spill clean-up. People seeking any further information should contact MSQ on 1800 216 723.
Until further notice from the state government, people are advised to heed all warning and safety signs posted at affected areas.
