Neighbours working together on a Low Carbon Diet

5 March 2010 Neighbours working together on a Low Carbon Diet

Sunshine Coast Council's libraries are playing a key role in the State Government's Low Carbon Diet program to increase sustainability through neighbourhood eco-teams.

Council's Learning Communities branch manager Ross Duncan, said a State Government $10,000 grant secured by the libraries is funding this next step to increase sustainable solutions in the home.

"The Low Carbon Diet will help people reduce their carbon footprint in just 30 days by making some easy lifestyle changes at home," said Mr Duncan.

"We are forming eco-teams of neighbours in the community, which will kick off the program, before returning a month later to collate the results of their individual activities.

"Libraries are the key source of a vast amount of information. We are seeking to help people navigate the myriad of programs, jargon and strategies that exist, basically to make embracing environmental sustainable actions simpler -- simply sustainable," he said.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said this program was a great initiative to make more people aware that some easy changes in lifestyle can assist the community in becoming more sustainable long-term.

"A critical aspect of sustainability is how our community sources, conserves, and uses energy, in particular electricity and transport fuels, in the region." Cr Jones said.

Low Carbon Diet sessions are being held in the following locations and people can register by calling 5475 8950 or by emailing libraries@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. More information is available from www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
